About Us

How we started

Right from the beginning, the Seattle Junior Chamber, has been active in community development and in training tomorrow’s leaders.  Past Seattle members include such notable leaders as Governor Dan Evans, Senator Brock Adams, Kenneth Schoenfeld, Ralph Benaroya, and US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Jerome Farris. A proud tradition has been established in the Seattle Junior Chamber of being an outstanding organization respected by the people of Seattle for its members’ active participation in the community. On January 21, 1931, twelve young men set their names to our articles of incorporation as the original officers of the Seattle Junior Chamber of Commerce.  Vernon Latimer, charter president, set out with the sole purpose of making Seattle a better place in which to live.

Membership in the Seattle Jaycees is open to men and women ages 18 to 40. Members are encouraged to get actively involved in community and individual development projects as well as in the management of the local chapter, state, and national organizations. Prospective members are welcome to attend any of our regularly scheduled monthly meetings. The General Membership (GM) Meeting gives attendees information on current projects and volunteer opportunities and typically includes a program or speaker, dinner, and a social hour. Meetings are held at various locations throughout the year, you can find meeting locations and details on our Events Calendar or by reaching out to us on our Contact Us page.

The united states junior chamber (U.S. JAYCEES)

The Seattle Jaycees are a local chapter member of the United States Junior Chamber (US Jaycees).  The US Jaycees provide young people between the ages of 18 and 40 the tools they need to build the bridges of success for themselves in the areas of business development, management skills, individual training, community service, and international connections.  Since its inception in 1915, the Jaycees have grown into an international organization with local chapters in 100+ nations and territories worldwide.

Jaycee chapters have built parks, playgrounds, hospitals, ball fields, and housing for the elderly while conducting service and support programs in thousands of communities nationwide. Current and former Jaycee members can be found in all walks of life: governmental leaders such as past Presidents Bill Clinton and Gerald Ford, business tycoons such as Domino’s Pizza mogul Tom Monaghan, registered nurse and former Miss America Kaye Lani Rae Rafko-Wilson, and sports heroes like basketball great Larry Bird. With the current focus of the nation on volunteerism, from the smallest towns to the largest cities, Jaycees are active in creating new areas of opportunity for young people.
